What’s the Difference Between Botox and Dysport?
When you think of cosmetic procedures to reduce wrinkles, you most likely think of Botox. However, Dysport is another non-surgical cosmetic treatment that works exactly the same way and, in fact, is derived from the same source – botulinum toxin type A. Both are approved by the FDA for the treatment of reducing frown lines and wrinkles by relaxing the facial muscles, in addition to other medical uses.
So what’s the difference? The first thing to understand is that both Botox and Dysport are brand names, much in the same way other prescription drugs that treat specific ailments have different names. Although both are used to serve the same cosmetic function, they are not the same thing. The formula of each is slightly different, causing slightly different results.
Independent studies have shown that Dysport tends to cause the smoothing results sooner and can potentially last longer than Botox. The two injectables work similarly by affecting the facial muscles to reduce the visibility and formation of dynamic wrinkles (wrinkles like “laugh lines” that are caused by facial muscle contractions). Both can also treat excessive sweating, as well.
As you can see, the two products are similar, but not identical. We offer and administer both, so patients can decide for themselves which works best for their cosmetic treatment needs. Our practitioners can answer specific questions during consultations, but only you can determine which product works best for you. Botox is certainly the more well-known and commonly used product, but Dysport has its own benefits and is seeing growing popularity in the market.
